FAQs

What tuning did Tony Iommi use? ›

First, he started down-tuning his guitar, to D# and C# standard. This lowered the tension against his fingers, making it easier for him to play for longer periods of time. Iommi and the rest of Black Sabbath found out that these lower tunings also made the music sound heavier, and an entire genre of music was born.

Are Tony Iommi and Ozzy Osbourne friends? ›

He talks a bit about the early days of the band, touches on their career, and then zooms up to the present day and opens about his rekindled relationship with Ozzy. Iommi says that they're in contact "virtually every week" now and are on great terms without the obligation of Black Sabbath looming over them.

Does Tony Iommi use fuzz? ›

Though Iommi didn't use fuzz or distortion pedals in Sabbath's early days (though I've read he started using Tube Screamers in the aughts), a good fuzz with some meaty trebly midrange should get your take on the opening chords of “War Pigs” suitably metallic.

Was Tony Iommi a welder? ›

Before becoming a professional musician, as a teenager Tony worked as a welder in a factory. On his last day of work, he had an accident that severed the tips of his ring and middle fingers on his right hand, which the left-handed rocker used for fretting.

What is Tony Iommi's favorite guitar? ›

Gibson Custom SG Special Electric Guitar.

Did Black Sabbath use drop D? ›

“One time we started talking about our favorite Sabbath songs and Buzz told us about this tuning Tony Iommi used called 'drop D' that made everything sound darker and heavier.

Is Tony Iommi considered a good guitarist? ›

How many fingertips did Tony Iommi lose? ›

While losing two fingertips ultimately couldn't keep Iommi from playing the guitar, it dramatically shaped his sound going forward.

Does Tony Iommi wear prosthetic fingers? ›

After losing the tips of his right-hand middle and ring fingers in a metal shop accident at 17, which was especially devastating considering it was his fretting hand, Iommi's strong will and devotion to his craft led him to develop the thimble-like prosthetics he still wears today.

What did Tony Iommi invent? ›

Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi is the man who invented heavy metal. “War Pigs,” “Children of the Grave,” “Symptom of the Universe”: those seismic riffs presented a blueprint that a generation of hard rock axe-wielders would follow. Circa 1970, Iommi's playing sounded like nothing out there.

Did Tony Iommi use a pedal? ›

Iommi's Pedals

Iommi is famous for using a Dallas Rangemaster Treble Booster, although it's not so well known that it was modified.

Did Tony Iommi play in standard tuning? ›

Though he began tuning down a whole-step much earlier for Sabbath's live shows (their first two albums are in standard tuning), Iommi later dropped his tuning an additional half-step beginning on Master of Reality.

What tuning does black tongue use? ›

Six full steps (one octave) down from Drop D. 8 string example; D-A-d-a-d-G-B-E. Black Tongue uses this tuning.

What tuning is Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath in? ›

Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Technical Ecstasy, and Never Say Die are in standard tuning. Otherwise, there are common tunings for each album, with some songs as exceptions. This list seems to be pretty accurate: Black Sabbath (Standard Tuning)
