CMDC Open Letter to All Leaders in the Advertising Community. We invite our advertising community to recognize the importance of supporting local media through the Canadian Media Manifesto. Our local media outlets are currently facing significant challenges, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure their future sustainability. Local journalism is the backbone of our communities, informing us about important local events, issues, and stories that impact our lives. However, without adequate support, these vital sources of news and information are at risk of disappearing, leaving a void that cannot be filled. The Canadian Media Manifesto provides a comprehensive framework for collaboration and advocacy. By uniting in our efforts, we can strengthen and protect our local media ecosystem. We urge you to stand with us in support of local media by actively championing the Canadian Media Manifesto. Let's work together to create a future where local media thrives, flourishing in its ability to better serve Canadian audiences and communities.#SupportLocalMedia #CanadianMediaManifesto #medialeaders https://lnkd.in/gW6C5_-u

Sad to see this Canadian startup go down! Vice is an important and trusted source of journalism, and not one of the monopoly media companies. We need to find new models so that proper journalism can survive. Although there are major economic challenges to producing sound journalism, it's not something that can be compromised because of lack of profits. It's time to embrace new business models to support de-centralized non-corporate journalism. The recent new Canadian law Bill C-11 and the upcoming Bill C-18 only empower huge companies like Rogers and Bell to survive in the online content competition. These laws favour the big boys, and don't do much for smaller media organizations. Assuming the big companies are the only viable business models to support journalism is a huge mistake for the communities and democracy in Canada! #localnews #decentralized #digitalcontent #BillC11

Seriously, Lachlan, will just a photo op make it better? After subjecting myself to some Fox News Media viewing, there appears to be no obvious change to the editorial content which we all know targets the #MAGA Republican National Committee folks, so why the (dangerous) public relations exercise by going to #Ukraine? There could be two reasons.Firstly, it might be a perceived business imperative. Brian Stelter's book might be giving Fox Corporation and News Corp advertisers some more business or ethic dilemmas and might lead to lower revenues. Additionally, cable companies pay #Fox a lot to put its channels on basic cable and the relevant question is why wouldn't, over time, shift those channels to a paid tier because the viewers are an increasingly smaller part of the US population. #FoxNews specifically needs to justify itself as a "serious news" channel so the photo op gives Lachlan a reason to meet and talk to cable companies and advertisers even if nothing changes in the programming.Secondly, it may be personal reasons. If you, and your family, wants to partake in polite society in New York, get invited to state dinners at the White House with a Democrat occupant, hang out with 90% of the elite the UK, etc, you don't want to be made persona non grata because you are ultimately responsible for revving up the crazies and deplorables, thus making things unsafe for the other elites. It would be obvious to Team Murdoch that being PNG'ed like #IvankaTrump would not be fun for her or her family: living in Florida, or going to NASCAR races, isn't as much fun as the Upper West Side and the Met Gala! The challenge for Team Murdoch if it attempted to change its editorial policies has already witnessed: see Newsmax Media, Inc. Ironically, the start of the remedy for Fox is to get itself, and all its alternatives, kicked off basic cable ASAP. Subsequent actions can then provide the solution. However, that isn't the type of non-conventional thinking expected of folks who like travelling between safe "bubbles" by private jets. In what has become a sadly familiar story for many media companies, the SaltWire Network, Atlantic Canada’s largest newspaper publisher, has filed for creditor protection.Like other outlets, the company struggled with declining ad revenues and readers’ reluctance to pay for online access (despite a federal tax credit). https://lnkd.in/gHrn48jyThis is not news. J-Source.ca | The Canadian Journalism Project reported that during year one of the pandemic, 67 Canadian outlets closed. The picture hasn’t improved since and isn’t confined to newspapers. Much lauded, all-digital BuzzFeed News bit the dust last year (See: A Notable Media Milestone or Just Another News Outlet Obit? https://lnkd.in/gjc9_GPs). Remember the recent layoffs at Bell Media?Coverage about the ailing-but-still-operating Saltwater has focused on the business narrative, employee impact and local news coverage implications. A “news desert” may follow in affected communities, i.e., there may be no “nutritious” information source to keep citizens current and democracy healthy. One undiscussed consequence applies to public relations. PR outreach campaigns depend on viable outlets with well-defined audiences for their “earned media.” Without them, there is no third-party transmission conduit. Just as media businesses must adapt to survive and thrive, so too must the PR pros who rely on them. Change is coming…or else.#media #journalism #newspapers #publicrelations #communications #communication #digitalcommunications #businessstrategy #economics
