Green Wave Student-Athletes Excel in the Classroom - Tulane University Athletics (2024)

June 4, 2004

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane placed 127 student-athletes on the Conference USA Honor Roll for 2003-04, highlighting the most recent academic achievements for Tulane student-athletes and reinforcing the University's commitment to a model athletics program.

In addition, senior Birka Wicke from the Tulane women's track and field team was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VI team. Wicke was a Second Team selection after posting a 3.87 cumulative grade-point average as a double major in math and environmental studies.

Of the 127 Tulane students on the C-USA Academic Honor Roll, 15 earned the prestigious Commissioner's Academic Medal indicative of a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or above. To make the Academic Honor Roll, student-athletes must post a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.00 on a 4.00 scale for that academic year.

The Green Wave women's soccer team led the way for Tulane with 22 representatives on the C-USA Academic Honor Roll, an amazing 81 percent of coach Betsy Anderson's 27 team members. Tulane won a school record 11 games and reached the semifinals of the Conference USA Tournament for the first time in school history in the fall.

"Over the past three years, we have always stressed academics," Anderson said. "When our freshmen arrive, they know from the start that academic performance is a high priority. Our standards have increased in the classroom and on the field and it has paid off with these impressive grades and a school-record for victories. A Tulane education is a great opportunity and we expect our student-athletes to take full advantage of that."

The Wave baseball and football teams each placed 16 student-athletes on the Honor Roll. Coach Daniella Irle's first-year women's swimming program had 10 of its 15 swimmers post 3.0's or better.

On the list of Academic Medal winners were five members of Coach Heather Van Norman's women's track and field team, while Coach Tom Shaw's men's golf team had four members record 3.75 grade-point averages or better. Tulane's Conference USA Academic Honor Roll Selections
