In 1933, Don joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and served with them for two years. This was the very beginning of his long career in conservation. In 1935, he transferred to the CCC camp near Laona, WI where he again worked on road building, although he got to spend the summer back in a fire tower at Long Lake.

Because of Don's experience working in the fire tower while with the CCC, he was able to get a seasonal job with the Wisconsin Conservation Department working in another fire tower. Then Don was offered a job checking commercial fishing on Green Bay which led to a job at the fish hatchery in Sturgeon Bay. On December 1, 1942, he received his permanent credentials in the law enforcement division and was stationed at Oconto Falls. Don transferred to the Sturgeon Bay station in 1943 and later was stationed in Kewaunee where he served as supervisor of law enforcement on Lake Michigan. In 1950, he moved to Green Bay where in addition to his duties on Lake Michigan, he served as Brown County Warden on several occasions.
