What to serve with Baked Chicken Parmesan

There are so many great serving options for this dish! You can go classic, or mix it up a little, but either way, I hope that your family will love it as much as mine. Here are some of our favorite ways to serve Baked Chicken Parmesan.

  • Pasta– Serve it traditionally with spaghetti tossed in marinara sauce. If you have small kids like me, you might want to use bite sided pasta like rotini or ziti instead for less mess. If you are looking for a lighter option you can also substitute spaghetti squash or zoodles for the pasta.
  • Salad– I love this dish with a big side salad. Top it with your favorites along with some creamy Italian dressing and you are in for a treat!
  • Garlic Bread– Nothing says yummy Italian food better than garlic bread!
  • Mashed Potatoes– If you don’t want to do pasta, mashed potatoes would be a great starch to add instead. These garlic mashed potatoes are a perfect match for Baked Chicken Parmesan.
  • Sauteed Green Beans This is a great family friendly and easy to make veggie to add to the mix for a little extra wholesome boost.
  • Roasted Veggies– Since you already have the oven heated up, it is easy to pop in some veggies to roast while the chicken is cooking too! We love this flavor packed roasted cauliflower!

You can pick one or two side options for the Baked Chicken Parmesan or go all out with even more. Either way, it is sure to be a hit all around. If you have a great serving idea that I missed, please let me know in the comments. I would love to try it out next time I make this dish!

How to Make Baked Chicken Parmesan

This Baked Chicken Parmesan Recipe is super simple as promised. I am going to walk through it with you here step by step to give you all of my tips for getting perfect Chicken Parm every time. You can find the full printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Baked Chicken Parmesan Recipe – Ingredients

  • 2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breast – 2 pounds of chicken should be around 3-4 average sized chicken breasts. Trim the chicken andcut it into 6-8 thin pieces. You will basically want to cut each chicken breast in half so that it is about 1/2″ thick.
  • 1/4 cup all purpose flour- Just regular old flour.
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 3/4 cup dry bread crumbs- I use plain, but if you use Italian bread crumbs you will want to omit the Italian seasonings below.
  • 3/4 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese-Make sure to use parmesan so that you have a hard dry cheese. If you try to sub mozzarella or other softer cheeses this recipe will not work.
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp italian seasoning-omit if using bread crumbs that are already seasoned.
  • 2 cups marinara sauce-Use your favorite brand of sauce here or find a recipe for homemade marinara sauce here.
  • 4 oz fresh mozzarella cheese, thinly sliced-I like to use fresh mozzarella and slice it up, however you can use grated mozzarella if you need to in a pinch!

Baked Chicken Parmesan Recipe – Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400˚F. This higher heat will help to make the coating on the chicken nice and crisp. This is also why it is important to make sure your chicken is cut more thinly. If it is too thick the outside could get over cooked before the inside gets completely done at this temperature.
  2. In a shallow dish, mix the bread crumbs, parmesan cheese, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning until combined.
I like to arrange 3 dishes in a row with the cookie sheet at the end to make the assembly process very simple. The first has the flour, the next has the beaten eggs, and the final dish has the bread crumb mixture. Working quickly through this process helps the coating to come out perfectly!
  3. Roll the chicken breast in the flour so all sides are coated and shake any excess off. Then dip the chicken into the egg mixture to coat and then roll the chicken in the bread crumb mixture. Complete each step so that the chicken breast is completely coated.
This step provides the magic! The flour helps the breading to stick to the chicken breast. The egg will provide the moisture for the bread crumbs to stick and bind the coating together, and the bread crumb and parmesan mixture will give it all of the flavor.
  4. Place each chicken piece on a greased cookie sheet flat and not touching the other other chicken breast. You many need two cookie sheets to spread them out without touching. Making the baked chicken parmesan on a cookie sheet is important. I have tried it several different ways and the thin cookie sheet helps both the bottom and top of the chicken to get crisp. You want the chicken to not touch so that it will cook more quickly aand evenly and the moisture won’t get trapped and cause the chicken to get soggy.
  5. Bake on the lower oven rack for 15-20 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through (internal temp 165˚F) . Remove from the oven, spoon 2-3 tbsp marinara sauce over the center of each chicken breast and top each with the sliced mozzarella. Return to the oven on the top rack and place on broil for 3-5 minutes or until the cheese is melted and starts to brown.
I like to only spoon the sauce over the center of the chicken so that there isn’t too much moisture which can make the chicken soggy. You can toss the pasta you serve with the chicken parmesan with additional marinara if you want more sauce, but this keeps the chicken perfectly crispy.

I hope these tips help you make perfect chicken parmesan for your family! We have been enjoying this recipe for many years and I hope your family can enjoy it even longer.

What is the real name for chicken parmesan? ›

Chicken parmesan or chicken parmigiana (Italian: pollo alla parmigiana) is a dish that consists of breaded chicken breast covered in tomato sauce and mozzarella, Parmesan, or provolone cheese. A quantity of ham or bacon is sometimes added.

Is chicken parmesan better with mozzarella or provolone? ›

The use of the parmesan, mozzarella and provolone together leads to a really nice balance of cheesy flavor as opposed to just using mozzarella, which is how I have made it in the past. This will definitely be my favorite “go to” Chicken Parmigiana recipe for now on.

What not to put with parmesan? ›

You see, in Italy, Parmesan cheese is reserved for pasta dishes with tomato-based sauces, cream sauces, and meat-based dishes. Adding Parmesan cheese to a seafood-based dish, like spaghetti with clams, is a big no-no. It's like adding ketchup to a steak or pineapple on a pizza – it just doesn't belong!

Why is my chicken parm not crispy? ›

To maximize crispiness, I use panko breadcrumbs and fry the chicken in a little more oil (about an inch) than you might normally use when making parm. As soon as the cutlets are nicely browned and cooked all the way though, drain them on a rack or paper towels. They're crunchy; this will help them stay that way.

Why is my chicken parm soggy? ›

The key to great non-soggy chicken Parmesan? Don't put any sauce under the chicken cutlets, just a little bit of sauce on top, so the breading stays relatively crisp. If you like a lot of sauce on your chicken Parmesan, that's fine, you can always serve extra sauce on the side.

How to make something crunchy without breadcrumbs? ›

Go with a Grain

Puffed quinoa is a great sub for breadcrumbs to create satisfying, crunchy food, says Becker. "Set up three bowls: ground puffed quinoa, raw scrambled eggs, and puffed quinoa. Plunge chicken, fish, or veggies into the ground puffed quinoa, then the egg, then the puffed quinoa, and sear or bake.

Should I use flour or breadcrumbs for chicken? ›

Nevertheless, breadcrumbs will produce a more robust crunch when used to cover the chicken before cooking. Flour by itself is somewhat tasteless, but breadcrumbs that have been seasoned or blended with herbs may give a lot of flavor.

Can I replace bread crumbs with crackers? ›

Crackers. Crushed-up crackers make an excellent bread crumb substitute in baked dishes like meatballs or meatloaf. The crackers work just as well as the bread crumbs to hold the meat mixture together, and using varieties like salty saltines or buttery Ritz is a great way to add an extra burst of flavor to your dish.
